Antoin Sevruguin in the Context of Russian Culture in the Caucasus

Antoin Sevruguin was one of the central figures in the development of photography in Persia at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. He was an owner of a successful photo studio in Tehran, the winner of numerous medals at international expositions in Europe, and his photographs were published in travel guides and scientific publications. Despite his successful career, Sevruguin’s early life remains mostly undocumented. However, what few details are known help us to understand the context of the development of his artistic career and the self-representation of his work as “photographie artistique.”
