On Friday 2 July 2021, Director-General Webber Ndoro was honoured to meet with H.E. Al-Dafar Al-Hamdani, Minister of Culture in Iraq, and Mr Zaid Al-Ani, First Secretary of the Embassy of Iraq in Rome. Zaki Aslan, Director, ICCROM-Sharjah Regional Office and Rohit Jigyasu, Project Manager, Programmes Unit, also attended online and in person, respectively.
The visit came as ICCROM spearheads a two-year capacity building programme in Iraq’s second-largest city Mosul, which suffered heavy damage as a result of its occupation from 2014 to 2017. The Director-General said the pioneering project aimed to provide the city’s young architects, engineers and craftspeople with skills for recovering cultural heritage, focusing on sustainability and resilience.
